A Gnosis Retreat Center Benefit
Do you want to see a change in how we treat people deemed "insane"? Do you believe we can do better? Would you help if you could?
Would you if that meant enjoying free cocktails and eating incredible hors d'oeuvres, while the melodious sound of fingers tickling guitar strings makes you wanna cry, and the sight of a lone dancer in passionate movement touches your soul? This is the night you win a personal yoga teacher at the auction, and meet Fritjof Capra at the open bar to ask him that burning question; The night you make a new friend, drink freely, ponder deeply, watch in wonder, learn from Dr. Capra. and make a difference.

We are pleased to present an evening of:
-Cocktail Reception with Open Bar accompanied by Live Guitar with Sam Hinds
-Fritjof Capra discussing Community & Authenticity
-Guest Dance Performance with DsouL
-Live Auction and special raffle with free tickets
In this talk, Fritjof will first summarize the systems view of life and discuss the conceptual relationships between social network, culture, and community. In the main part of the talk he will present four reasons for why creating and nurturing communities is critical for moving toward ecological sustainability:
1. Sustainability always involves a whole community.
2. The best way to counteract excessive material consumption is to find happiness in human relationships — in community — rather than in the acquisition of goods.
3. Our corporate and political world lacks a moral compass. We need to reintroduce ethics into business. Ethics always has to do with community; it is behavior for the common good.
4. Transformative learning, which is what we urgently need today, takes place most effectively in a learning community. At the end, and in the discussion, Fritjof and his colleagues, Michael Guy Thompson, and Nita Gage will link these various aspects of community to the therapeutic communities created by R.D. Laing.
World-renowned street-dancer, Daniel Norwood aka DsouL will take a deep-dive into a young man's struggle to connect with himself, isolated and scared as he is of those with whom he can no longer connect. This live performance will summon forth the profound humanity found in what seem to be our darkest moments. Daniel Norwood has performed across the world and is widely acclaimed for his many victories in international street dancing competitions, for his award-winning short video performances including "What is Real?", and for his dance alongside Taylor Swift in the American Music Awards.
Lydia Violet Harutoonian began her journey with the fiddle at age 3 when her father took her to their local instrument shop in Pasadena, California and asked her to pick her favorite instrument. From that moment on, Lydia entered into a profound love affair with the timbre and scope of the violin. At age 24 she ventured out from her classical roots and discovered her natural skill for improvisation as well as her unique sound stemming from her Persian heritage and love of music that spans many genres. A musical chameleon, Lydia is able to jump in with a wide range of artists including most recently producers in transformational festival communities. In the fall of 2016 Lydia produced her debut album, "Already Free," a 12-song exploration of music that is inspired by protest traditions, a profound care for community and the Earth, blues, and international folk music. She can currently be seen playing with Brooklyn-based spoken word group Climbing PoeTree and songstress Ayla Nereo. She has also shared stages this year with MaMuse, The Polish Ambassador, Rising Appalachia, and many more.
